Ange Postecoglou showed his frustration by lashing out at a journalist after Tottenham’s latest defeat at Everton.
Depleted Spurs’ poor Premier League form continued at Goodison Park on Sunday, where they trailed 3-0 to previously timid opponents after a disastrous first half before a late rally ultimately saw them lose 3-2.
It was another miserable day in what has been an extremely bleak winter for Tottenham, whose ongoing injury crisis was further compounded by blows to Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and Yves Bissouma as their absentee list reached two numbers.
They have now lost 12 of their 22 top-flight matches so far this season to sit 15th in the table, now just four points behind 16th-placed Everton and just eight clear of the relegation zone.
Despite the never-ending slew of injuries and promising campaigns in cup competitions that could yet bear fruit, such a dismal championship run has seen serious pressure mount on manager Postecoglou, who has accepted responsibility for the disastrous first half. Sunday time on Merseyside after a formation change. This seriously backfired on me.
The Australian’s irritation and frustration was evident during an awkward exchange with a BBC interviewer which followed the defeat to Everton.
The reporter asked: “Angel, familiar story, what are your evaluations of this performance please?” »
Postecoglou then looked up, perplexed as he replied: “A familiar story? », before his interviewer clarified that he was talking about another defeat for Spurs.
The Tottenham boss was clearly annoyed by this approach and said: “Yeah, okay, that’s a great way to start an interview.”
He then added: “Yeah, look, it was a tough result for us. Obviously, in the first half we struggled to take control of the match.
“Obviously I made some changes to the team that probably didn’t help in the end. The players had difficulty accepting it, Everton took advantage of it.
“In the second half, the players gave the right response. Thanks to them, but obviously we didn’t succeed.
